Why Water Alone Isin't Always Enough
Share
Water is fundamentally the most important resource on the planet. There is no denying that simple fact or that we would not live without water. The general rule of thumb is that if you do not have water for more than three days...well, you probably know this deadly part. The human body is made up of about 60-70% water alone. Infants can be closer to 75% water, and older individuals closer to about 55%. We don't need to harp on the fact that water is profoundly important.
But is water the go to answer to hydrate? Is there something potentially missing from the equation? Should we look at the other 30-40% of what we are made of to come up with a better answer?
Water is a great start to achieving a good baseline hydration level. However, if you are going above and beyond, working out, holding a hard labor job, spending hours out in the sun, and sweating, then your water needs a little extra help to better rehydrate you.
Lemonade Analogy (yes, we chose this because we have a blueberry lemonade flavor)
Situation #1 (Hyponatremia or Hypochloremia risk)
When too much water is present and starts too dilute serum level sodium or chloride levels. There has been too much water without enough electrolyte replacement.
Imagine you are making a batch of lemonade. You accidentally misread the instructions, and you added 1.5 gallons of water instead of the one gallon. It's not completely ruined, but the flavor is much less potent, it's nowhere near as sweet, and you are just getting a hint of lemon. You can deal with it this one time, and you learned the lesson of not using too much water because it's way too watered down now or much more diluted.
Situation #2 (Hypertonic situation)
When there is a greater concentration of solutes (electrolytes) found outside of the cell, water will be disproportionately moving out of cells. Water likes to follow the greater concentrates of solutes, resulting in water leaving the inside of cell.
This time you got the water amount right, but you instead added 2 cups of sugar instead of 1 cup. The lemonade at least has a good flavor, but it's just too sweet for your palate. Again, you can deal with it this one time, but you know next time you need to make sure that you get the water and sugar amounts right to achieve the perfect lemonade. Lesson learned: too much sugar makes for an unfavorable sweetness.
Situation #3 (Hypotonic situation)
When the concentration of electrolytes outside the cell is too low, water moves inward through osmosis to balance the difference, which can make cells swell and disrupt normal function.
This time you weren't paying attention, and you added two packets of lemon flavoring to the water. Now the lemonade is way too tart, and the flavor is overpowering the sugar. It's sort of drinkable. Again, lesson learned: you need the perfect amount of water, sugar, and flavoring to get the absolute best-tasting lemonade.
The water in your body is no different than the lemonade described above; it needs a perfect blend of water (water), sugar (electrolytes), and flavoring (minerals) to be the best lemonade possible. Too much of any ingredient or the lack of other ingredients can throw everything off in the end. Properly rehydrating encompasses this idea. You must have every component of the lemonade for the end result to be the most optimal lemonade possible.
The Solution
Our electrolyte formula, BioDrip, was designed with this idea in mind. BioDrip aims to solve every situation described above and then some with its full spectrum of electrolytes and added trace minerals. It delivers the electrolytes and minerals in levels that your body needs to ensure proper hydration. You can check out our formula with a breakdown to see for yourself just how BioDrip stands in the industry here.
Water alone is essential—but not always enough. True hydration means restoring the full balance of electrolytes and minerals your body relies on to function at its best. That’s exactly why BioDrip was created—to complement water, not replace it. By delivering the precise blend your body needs, BioDrip helps you hydrate smarter, recover faster, and keep your system running at peak performance—just like the perfect glass of lemonade.
