How Dehydration Affects Strength, Endurance, and Recovery

Electrical signaling impaired- Muscles need an electrical signal to contract and relax, not having all of the conductors in the right locations (electrolytes in and out of cells), the target muscle can't perform as its told as there is a restricted pathway to the muscle

Increased perceived muscle exertion- Due to an impaired state of the cardiovascular and nervous system function, these systems are working harder than normal, workouts seem to be more difficult than they actually are even if muscle output doesn't change

Effects on Endurance

Temperature regulation impairment- A lower sweat rate/volume will lead to an increase in body temperature, resulting in overheating faster

Cardiovascular efficiency decrease- As described above, lower blood pressure and volume will cause a downstream effect of increasing your heart rate to counteract this issue, moderate to high intensity training will not be sustainable

Glycogen usage decreased- Energy (glycogen) go hand-in-hand with water storage, glycogen can't be broken down and utilized as effectively if the medium it needs is not as present as it should be, making muscle endurance and exhaustion onset faster than normal

Effects on Recovery

Impaired muscle repair- Water and electrolytes are needed to transport nutrients, oxygen, and blood to muscles in need of repair. A depletion in either will negatively impact the recovery process of any muscle

Hormonal hinderance- The more dehydrated you are, the more cortisol will start to rise, too high of cortisol levels for too long will start to deplete testosterone levels resulting in a stunt in muscle growth and recovery

Increased muscle soreness- Lowered levels overall hydration and levels of sodium, potassium, magnesium can result in prolonged muscle soreness and increased muscle cramping chance
